A design preview is most useful when you know what to look for. The PHOBIA archive lets you inspect a yo-yo’s form and assembly before discussing its development. Start with CHRONOPHOBIA, keep its design brief nearby, and work through one question at a time. You do not need to download a CAD file.
1. Start with a steady view
Choose a design from the collection, or open its dedicated Design Page. On Home, open Tools to reach the inspection controls. Drag to orbit and use the zoom controls or scroll wheel to move closer. Front, Top, and Side views give you repeatable starting points when comparing the rim, cup, and overall profile.
Turn off Auto rotate and Spin yoyo while inspecting a detail. Auto rotate changes the view around the object; spin animates the yo-yo around a selected axis. They serve different viewing purposes. Reset view gives you a useful starting position if you lose your orientation.
2. Read the silhouette and surfaces
Begin with the outline before looking at small details. Follow the change from the outer rim towards the response area, and inspect the same feature from another angle. Edges can make boundaries easier to follow; switching them off gives a cleaner impression of the surfaces.
Try the light or dark background if a boundary is difficult to see. Part colors and finishes are visual previews. A metallic appearance does not confirm a production material, surface finish, or manufacturing process.
3. Separate a question from the assembly
Open Parts to hide an obstructing piece, isolate a selection, or restore all parts. This is often clearer than trying to see through the complete assembly. A hidden part is still part of the design; you have only changed its visibility.
Use Exploded view to inspect how pieces are arranged, then try an X, Y, or Z separation direction. Some pieces may move together or remain fixed because of the saved group and motion settings. Explosion is a viewing aid, not a change to the original geometry or an assembly instruction.
4. Use sections and measurements carefully
XYZ section controls visually clip the model along each axis. Move one cut at a time to expose a rim or an internal relationship. The cut faces remain open: the viewer does not create closed CAD section caps. Reset cuts before judging the complete outline again.
Measure selects two visible surface points and reports an approximate straight-line distance in millimetres. Inspection pauses animation, and measurement resets explosion. Pick points deliberately and check another view. Tessellated surfaces and point selection make this unsuitable for certifying tolerances or replacing a caliper measurement.
5. Leave with a specific design question
Read the project stage and distinguish a designer-entered specification from an estimate. If a dimension or material is unspecified, leave it open rather than treating a visual impression as a value. Restore hidden parts and cuts before comparing another concept.
A useful enquiry names the design, the feature you examined, and the playstyle you have in mind. For example: ask how a rim transition might be developed around your preferred hand feel. The preview gives that conversation a shared reference; prototype work is still needed to evaluate the feel on the string.
Before you leave the preview
- Check the assembled outline from more than one view.
- Restore parts and cuts before making a comparison.
- Separate visible shape, listed values, and questions for a prototype.
